Key takeaways
- Noorani Qaida is a beginner's primer that teaches the Arabic letters, their sounds and how they join, so that you can read the Quran.
- It covers the alphabet, short vowels, tanween, long vowels, sukoon, shaddah and more, in a step-by-step order.
- Many beginners need about one to three months of regular lessons. Our course is planned as 4 weeks.
- After Qaida, most students move on to fluent reading (Nazra) and then Tajweed.
If you or your child has never read Arabic, Noorani Qaida is where most teachers begin. It is a short, structured primer that takes you from the first letter to reading simple words, and it prepares you to read the Quran.
This guide explains what Noorani Qaida is, what each part teaches, how long it usually takes and how to make the most of it.
What is Noorani Qaida?
Noorani Qaida is a beginner's book for learning to read the Arabic of the Quran. It does not assume that you know any Arabic. It teaches the letters, the sounds they make and how they combine, and it builds up in small steps so that each new lesson uses what you already know.
Many people also use the spelling "Noorani Qaidah" or the name "Qaidah Nooraniyah." They all refer to the same type of beginner primer.
What you learn in Noorani Qaida
Exact lesson order varies a little between books and teachers, but most follow this progression:
- The Arabic letters (huroof). The 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet and the sound of each.
- Joined letters. Letters change shape depending on where they sit in a word, so you learn to recognize them at the start, middle and end.
- Short vowel marks (harakat). Fatha, kasra and damma, which tell you which vowel sound to make.
- Tanween. The double vowel marks that add an "n" sound at the end of a word.
- Long vowels (madd letters). How to stretch certain vowel sounds.
- Sukoon. The mark showing that a letter carries no vowel.
- Shaddah. The mark showing that a letter is doubled.
- Other basics. Soft letters (leen), rules for the noon and meem with no vowel, and simple stopping rules.
By the end, you should be able to read Arabic words with the correct vowel sounds and move on to reading the Quran.
How long does it take?
It depends on practice and on the student. Many beginners need about one to three months of regular lessons. Our Noorani Qaida course at Quran Mentor is planned as a 4-week beginner course covering Arabic alphabet recognition, basic pronunciation rules, letter combinations and simple word reading. Because lessons are one-to-one, your teacher can adjust the pace to you.

Who is Noorani Qaida for?
- Complete beginners who have never read Arabic.
- Children starting their first steps with the Quran. See our Quran classes for kids.
- Adults who want to learn privately and at their own pace. See our Quran classes for adults.
- Anyone who learned to read long ago and wants to go back to the basics and fix a weak foundation.
Common difficulties and how to handle them
Look-alike letters. Letters such as ب ت ث are distinguished only by the dots. Slow, careful practice helps.
Sounds that are new. Letters like ع, ح, خ, غ and ق do not exist in English. Listen to your teacher, repeat and get correction.
Similar sounds. Pairs such as ث ذ ظ, س ص and ت ط can sound alike until you train your ear.
Letters that change shape. Practice reading each letter in all its positions.
Losing motivation. Qaida can feel repetitive. Short daily practice and small goals keep you going.
Tips for learning Noorani Qaida well
- Practice a little every day. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough.
- Read out loud, not silently.
- Repeat each lesson until it feels easy before moving on.
- Revise the previous lesson at the start of each session.
- Have a teacher listen. Because you cannot hear your own mistakes, live correction matters most at this stage. Habits formed now are hard to change later.
- Be patient. A strong foundation makes every later stage faster.
What comes after Noorani Qaida?
- Quran reading (Nazra). You move from words to reading the Quran itself with fluency. Our course is listed as 8 weeks.
- Tajweed. You learn the rules of recitation. See our beginner's guide to Tajweed.
- Hifz or understanding the meaning. Depending on your goal, you can start memorization with our Hifz program or study translation.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know Arabic before starting Noorani Qaida?
No. It is designed for people who start with no Arabic at all.
Can children and adults both learn Noorani Qaida?
Yes. The content is the same, though a good teacher will adjust the style: shorter, more playful lessons for children and a more direct approach for adults.
Can I learn Noorani Qaida online?
Yes, as long as lessons are live and one-to-one, so the teacher can hear every sound and correct it. A microphone and a reliable internet connection help.
Is Noorani Qaida the same as learning the Arabic language?
No. Qaida teaches you to read the script and sounds of the Quran. Learning to understand Arabic is a separate study.
What is the next step after finishing Qaida?
Usually fluent Quran reading (Nazra), followed by Tajweed. Your teacher will tell you when you are ready.
